what are the fundamentals?

So, the question I get asked most often is, “What are the fundamentals of the Christian Faith?”. That’s a difficult question to answer, as the number of fundamentals can be anywhere from five to fourteen depending on who you ask. The original formulation of fudamentalist beliefs in the United States can be traced back to the Niagra Bible Conference (1878-1897), and to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1910, which distilled the beliefs into what we now call The Five Fundamentals:

  1. The inerrancy of the Scriptures
  2. The virgin birth and deity of Christ
  3. The doctrine of substitutionary atonement through God’s grace, and human faith
  4. The bodily resurrection of Jesus
  5. The authenticity of Christ’s miracles (or alternatively, the premillenial Second Coming of Christ)

These five fundamentals are key to the beliefs of any orthodox Christian, and to deny any of these leaves you outside the pale of historic Christianity…
