Paul’s fundamentals

“Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Paul, Romans 1.1-7

Paul hits all of the high notes in the first four verses of Romans. In these verses, we have the raw outline of the gospel as Paul preached it. It is a penetrating look at primitive Christianity. I would also have you note the close agreement with the Apostles Creed.

Paul’s view of the Old Testament

  1. It comes from God.
  2. It is given “through His prophets”.
  3. It is “holy” Scripture

Paul’s view of the Lord Jesus Christ

  1. He is God’s Son: “concerning His son”.
  2. He is the promised Savior: “Christ”, the Messiah
  3. He is Lord: “our Lord”.
  4. He is man: “born a descendant of David according to the flesh”.
  5. He is declared to be the very Son of God: “declared to be the Son of God with power”.
  6. He is divine, or holy: “according to the Spirit of holiness”.
  7. He is risen from the dead: “by the resurrection from the dead”.

Paul’s view of the Gospel

  1. It is of God: “the gospel of God”.
  2. It was prophesied: “he had promised…”
  3. It agrees with the Old Testament: “promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures”.
  4. It concerns God’s very own Son: “concerning His son”.
  5. It concerns the divine Savior: “Jesus Christ, our Lord…declared to be the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead”.
  6. It concerns the human Savior: “a descendant of David according to the flesh”.
  7. It concerns the risen Savior: “the resurrection from the dead”.
