prayer and God’s promises

This has been a hard week already. My habit in the evening has been to call Sweetpea, but due to the fast this week, I’ve not done so. We both felt that it would be easier to hear from God if we weren’t distracted by each other.

I’ve spent my evening studying some of my favorite passages from the Bible regarding prayer. The ones that I’ve focused on particularly are found in John’s gospel.

“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” –Gospel of John 15.7

“In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” — Gospel of John 16.23-24

Now, I do understand that James says in his letter that

“Ye ask and receive not because ye ask amiss”

But Jesus doesn’t put any qualifiers on His statements in John. He just puts it out there that if you ask, you will receive because God desires for His children to be happy. I find that to be totally amazing…

But right now the verse that I keep coming back to is this:

“Your way was in the sea
And Your paths in the mighty waters,
And Your footprints may not be known.” — Psalm 77.19

Footprints are impossible to see in water. And David explicitly say that God’s way lies through the sea…where you’ve got to follow closely if you’re going to keep up. That’s exactly how I feel right now…I’m doing my best to follow hard after God, but right now His path isn’t easily discerned.
