examine yourself

In our day of “name it – claim it” theology, this is bound to be an unpopular post. We live in an era of what may be called “easy believe-ism”, where self-examination is decidedly unpopular. We see people everyday saying that they “stand on the Word of God”, when in reality, they have no idea what the Word of God has to say.

I would encourage every believer that reads this blog regularly to engage is serious, intense self-examination. A great way to do this is by way of reading 1 John. Below is a list of questions to ask yourself, and they are all based on the First Epistle General of

  1. Do you keep the commandments of God?
  2. “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;” – 1 John 2.3-4

  3. Do you love the brethren?
  4. “The one who loves his brother abides in the Light and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.” – 1 John 2.10-11

  5. Do you love the world and the things of the world?
  6. “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” – 1 John 2.15

  7. Do you deny Jesus Christ is the Son of God?
  8. “Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.” – 1 John 2.22-23

  9. Do you deny a brother in Christ his material needs when you have an abundance?
  10. “But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?” – 1 John 3.17

  11. Do you do the things that are pleasing in the sight of God?
  12. “and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.” – 1 John 3.22
